Buying Guide: Choosing the Best Air Conditioner
Do you want to turn your home into a comfortable, climate-controlled paradise? There are some things you need to consider.
We always recommend seeking professional advice from your local Begents team before making your final decision. Our expert Leigh Carey is available to help you find the right solution for your home and budget and can even deliver and install your heating and cooling products.
1. Air Conditioner Strength Based on Room Size
Buying the right size unit is very important. Air conditioners that are too big will use a lot more power than necessary, costing you more in the long term. Air conditioners that are underpowered will work too hard trying to maintain temperatures and will quickly burn out.
There are so many factors that affect what size your system should be (insulation, windows etc.) the we recommend sitting down with Leigh Cary, our heating and cooling specialist.
2. Types of Air Conditioners
Split System
A split system is ‘split’ into two units: one that’s inside, and one that’s outside.
Reverse Cycle Split System
Reverse cycle refers to a style of air conditioner with both heating and cooling functions. Reverse cycle is an air conditioner in which the refrigeration cycle can be reversed, producing heating instead of cooling.
Inverter System
An inverter is a piece of air conditioning technology ramps up & down to control room temperature.
Multi System
Multi-split air conditioners connect multiple indoor units to a single outdoor condenser. They require less ductwork and usually have an infrared remote control for each indoor unit to regulate temperature.
Window Wall
This type of air conditioner can be installed into an external hole in the wall or onto a window sill. Some models can heat and cool, so you only need one appliance to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.
Portable Air Conditioner
This type of air conditioning is a great solution for those needing a quick fix in a small area - just plug it in to the power socket and it’s ready for use. A reverse cycle model can heat and cool, so you only need one appliance to create the right in-door climate all year round.
3. Extra features you might need.
Air conditioners with more features tend to be more expensive so budget accordingly.
Remote control - Control the temperature, fan speed or turn the system on/off remotely.
Timer - Set times to turn the system on and off, helping you save on energy bills.
Dehumidifier - Lower the humidity in the air for more comfortable living.
Reverse cycle - Heat and cool your house, giving you year round comfort.
Air filter - Removes odours, smoke and germs.
4. Energy Efficiency
Air conditioners are rated on their energy efficiency using a ten-star scale, with more stars meaning the unit is better for the environment. Units with cooling and heating functions are given separate ratings for each.
5. Cleaning & Maintenance
An air conditioner that isn’t properly maintained won’t perform properly and will use more energy. Ensure your air conditioner works properly and efficiently by cleaning and maintaining the;
Air Filters once a month when operating regularly. If you have pets or your system is exposed to high levels of dust, we recommend you check the filters more frequently.
Coils once a year. Dirt and leaves inevitably get in and around the condenser. Once a year give it a clean and make sure the area is clear of foliage, grass cuttings and other debris to ensure free flowing air around it.
Fins once a year. The coils both have fins that can bend and block air flow. A ‘fin comb’ is a special tool that can straighten the fins out.
Drains every so often. Condensate drains can clog, reducing your air conditioners ability to dehumidify your home. Use a stiff wire to clean the drains.
Seals at the start of summer. Check the seal between the air conditioner and the window, ensuring it’s tight and there isn’t any moisture damage.
Cleaning filters is a simple task that you can do yourself however we recommend that anything else such as cleaning coils/fins etc. should be done by a licensed professional as the coils are very, very easily damaged.
Getting your air conditioner thoroughly cleaned every year by a professional is recommended as it;
Reduces your energy bills.
Increases airflow and efficiency.
Removes mould and odours.
Kills and removes harmful bacteria.
6. Choose a professional installer
In Australia, you will need to hire a licensed professional to install and service your new air conditioning system. Air conditioners often include manufacturer’s warranties, so to ensure you’re covered under the warranty if something goes wrong, professional installation is a mandatory.
At Begents not only can we give you a free quote on installation, our qualified installers can deliver and install in for you too!
